Local storage and viewing
Thoughts, ratings, visit dates, cafe IDs, resized photos, cafe notes and settings are stored in this device's browser. There is no encryption or dedicated diary password. Private diary data is not stored on our server. Other people who can use the same device and browser can open the diary, so you are responsible for managing access to your device.
The read status of updates is stored only in your device and browser. It is not sent to our server and is shared between all language versions.
Saved starting points
Names and addresses of saved starting points, such as Home or Work, are stored only in your device's browser. They are not sent to or stored on our server or included in analytics. When requesting directions, only the selected address is sent to Google Maps Embed API; the saved name and other addresses are not sent. You can edit or delete starting points, and they are included in deleting all local data. Their names and addresses are included in backups, so you are responsible for storing backup files securely.
Taking photos from your diary
Allow camera access to take photos in your browser. No audio is captured. Unsaved photos are temporary browser data and are discarded when deleted or closed. Saving downloads a JPEG to your device and adds a smaller copy to the diary. Save the diary entry to keep that copy. Camera video and photos are not sent to our server. Deleting diary photos or all diary data does not delete images already downloaded to your device.
Photos
Selected photos are resized to a maximum long edge of 1280 pixels at JPEG quality 78%, without copying additional metadata such as location. Originals are not stored or linked. Photos are stored separately from entry text, and only those needed for display are loaded. Local storage saves individual images in IndexedDB.
Storage check
The initial storage limit is 100MB. It automatically increases in 100MB steps as available storage allows. No charges or subscription changes apply. Capacity checks reflect the current state and do not reserve or guarantee future space.
Storage is checked using browser estimates and a test write. An error is shown if there is insufficient space. No cloud connection or permissions are requested.
Deletion and backups
You can delete individual photos, thoughts and visit records. Deleting a photo also schedules its saved resized file for deletion. Deleting all photos, records and sharing settings requires two confirmations. This affects only the diary in this device's browser. Original images and downloaded backups remain. After deleting everything, the diary returns to its initial state.
If a storage problem prevents deletion, an error is shown and you can retry. Downloaded backups are not deleted.
Backups are unencrypted .cafebackup files containing photos. You are responsible for where you keep them. We recommend storing a copy outside your device, such as in cloud storage, in case it is lost or damaged. Backup and restore process all photos; normal viewing loads only the photos needed.
Maps and location
When you open the map, your location is requested if you allow it. If unavailable, the last map center saved in this browser is used, or Tokyo Station if none exists. The previous center is saved in this browser's localStorage. Your current location is not kept as a server record, but the map area is sent to this site to find cafes.
Cafe information and social media
OpenStreetMap cafe data and public information added by the administrator are stored on our server. Search terms, cafe IDs and map areas are sent to this site. Loading map tiles sends your IP address and viewing area to OpenStreetMap's tile servers. Cafe photos provided by the administrator are public and separate from your private visit photos.
Sharing includes the cafe name and its page on this site. You may also include the thoughts and photos selected in the sharing screen. Unselected entries are excluded. Your thoughts and photos are not stored on our server. We use your device's sharing feature and do not record which social media app you select.
Usage counts
We count new diary saves, favorites, and completed device sharing actions. Notices contain the action type, a per-action deduplication number, the public cafe ID for diary saves or cafe/entry sharing, and the photo count for a new entry. Diary text, photos, ratings, visit dates, and SNS names are not included; user identifiers are not stored in statistics aggregates. Daily and per-cafe totals are shown to administrators. Hashed action numbers, times, action types, and cafe IDs are temporarily retained for the last-24-hour view and deduplication, and records older than two days are periodically deleted. Sharing counts do not confirm publication to an SNS. Protection cookies and continued-use records are handled separately for the purposes and periods described below.
Bulk-access protection and continued use
To limit bulk collection of public cafe information, we store a protection cookie, a keyed hash of the connection IP, approximate distinct cafe counts, broad region counts, access times, and detection reasons. Protection records contain no raw IP, search terms, list of accessed cafes, or precise locations. Access-volume records are normally retained for 7 days; administrators can choose 1 to 30 days. Expired records are periodically removed.
Existing action notices record the days with diary entries, entries containing photos, favorites, and sharing as supporting signals of continued use for up to 90 days. Diary text, photos, ratings, and visit dates are not sent. Only the number of photos in a new entry is sent. Protection identifiers are not stored in action-statistics aggregates.
The protection cookie lasts up to 180 days. Deleting it resets browser-level continued-use recognition, separately from deleting your locally saved diary or photos. Connection-level volume is also checked, but does not alone determine whether use is legitimate or abusive.
Search and AI-reference bots are checked against official published IP ranges. Updating these lists contacts their official publishers without sending visitor IPs, browsing details, or diary content.
Analytics
Public pages use Google Analytics (measurement ID: G-VLCQTK75HK). Page URLs and browsing/device information are sent to Google, and cookies may be used. URL query strings and fragments that may contain authentication information, and referrer URLs, are excluded. Thoughts, ratings and uploaded diary photos are not included in analytics events. Google's Privacy Policy applies.
Advertising
We use Google AdSense to display ads. Advertising providers such as Google may use cookies and information about your device and browsing. For details, seeGoogle advertising information for more information.
Cafe requests
Cafe names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, hours, coordinates, reasons and submission times sent through listing request forms are stored on our server for review and application. Do not enter personal contact details or diary content. Approved cafe information is public. To limit bulk submissions, we store a keyed hash of the source IP and submission time, removing records over 24 hours old at the next submission. Request data does not store the raw IP. A verification session cookie is also used. Approximately the latest 500 processed requests are retained; older history is cleaned up when new requests arrive.
Server logs
Your hosting provider or the web server may log IP addresses, access times and URLs. No server database stores your private diary.
Google Maps
Cafe pages display Google Maps using Google Maps Embed API. Cafe names, addresses and coordinates are sent to Google to display the map, and Google may collect IP addresses and browser information. Directions from my location requests your permission, obtains your location and sends it to Google for routing. Your location is not stored on our server. Diaries, thoughts, photos and favorites are not sent. For Google's handling of this information, seeGoogle Privacy Policy for more information.
